Tokyo's Top Instagram Illumination Spot

December 15, 2018

My goal this year is to introduce a lot of Instagrammable Spots in Japan, and I have been doing so on my Instagram BUT I have never properly put it into a listed blog post. To make it easier for your next travel plan, I have decided to make this post and will continue to update it in the future!

Tokyo's during winter means illumination lights. It usually runs from the end of November to early February but you have to check each illumination because they have their own policy. I have visited some of them and decided that some are good for your eyes only, while some are good for both eyes and Instagram spots. Below are some of the illumination spots that you have to visit in the winter

MARUNOUCHI

Located around 5 mins from Tokyo Station South exit, it's Marunouchi Street. Filled with high-end brands and western-inspired restaurant and stores all along the street. They have probably one of the best illumination streets in Tokyo according to my opinion. The whole street has trees neatly lined up and decorated with illumination lights, some outdoor chairs for you to sit, along with non-touristy people. I would say the pictures don't do any justice because it's 5 times better in real life, but even if you can't take pictures of the illumination, simply head back to Tokyo Station and take a picture with its famous red brick station

EBISU GARDEN PLACE

For me, Christmas Market is something that I would miss from having Christmas in Europe but in Japan, one of the most famous areas that offer both illumination and Christmas market altogether is Ebisu Garden Place. Located around 10 mins walk from Ebisu JR or Metro, the whole complex is decorated with tons of illumination lights. But nothing beats their Christmas Tree which I feel the best and prettiest Christmas Tree in Tokyo. Sip some hot chocolate while strolling around the Christmas Market Shops to buy something cute, and maybe get your dinner afterwards

ODAIBA

Although Odaiba is not on the same island of Tokyo's Metropolitan Area, I consider it a part of Tokyo. The best illumination that I can find in Odaiba is located exactly outside Decks Tokyo Beach. They have Christmas Tree illumination, and heart-shaped illumination along. Best part? You're also able to capture Rainbow Bridge along with these illuminations!

CARETTA SHIODOME

Caretta Shiodome has been everyone's list on their must visit Tokyo's Illumination for a good reason. Their winter installation is grand, and they also have a certain shows depending on the year. In 2020, they collaborate with Disney Aladdin that incorporates the OST from Aladdin Movie such as Speechless and A Whole New World while putting on a show every 30 minutes or so. Visitors can also take pictures at the photo area for free! In 2020, I think it's my favorite Winter Illumination Show that I love the most!

HIBIYA MIDTOWN

Besides a street full of trees decorated with lights, the area also boost an amazing Hibiya Park nearby, Night Street Foods, and also Hibiya Midtown Shopping Mall that has an amazing Winter Illumination Pyramid Exhibition outside the mall. In 2020, their theme is Starlight Tree. You can also get inside the pyramid and take pictures from there!

ROPPONGI HILLS - KEYAKIZAKA DORI

Saving my favorite for the last, it's Keyakizaka Dori that's located outside Roppongi Hills and Grand Hyatt Tokyo. If you follow me on Instagram and see my story, you'll know how much I love Roppongi these days. Beautiful streets, high-quality foods, and Tokyo Tower that can be seen clearly. And they also have this whole street decorated specially for Christmas! And I love how I can take pictures of the illuminations along with the iconic Tokyo Tower. Whether you want to get down on the street or taking pictures on Roppongi Hills' bridge while overlooking the street, the pictures are bound to be beautiful!
